Can a Debt Collector Call me at Work?

Serving Los Angeles, Riverside, Ventura, San Bernardino Counties & Nearby Areas of California

ICreditor Harassment at Work | LA Attorneyf you have been receiving calls from a debt collector at your place of business, it is very possible that what they’re doing is illegal. The Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) has very specific regulations about where that collector can contact you. Debt collectors may be seeking contact with you because of unpaid debts or even fraudulent activity due to identity theft. Either way, there are laws in place to keep them from harassing you while at work or other places.

According to the FDCPA, contacting you at places that might be inconvenient is not allowed. This can include workplaces, schools, funeral homes, restaurants, and hospitals.

Because certain workplaces require that employees only take personal phone calls if it is an emergency, a debt collector is not allowed to make contact while you’re at work. The only stipulation to this is if the debt collector has a court order.
