One of the biggest medical debt collectors in the country, is being scrutinized by government officials, after the Minnesota attorney general revealed that the agency used controversial and aggressive debt collection tactics. As reported by The New York Times, the company pursues medical patients, even when the patients are still in the hospital.
Some of the unfair collection practices used include embedding debt collectors as employees in hospitals, confronting patients about debt while recovering in the hospital, and having collectors demand patients pay before receiving emergency room treatment.
Currently, investigations are underway in Illinois, Minnesota and the Health and Human Services Department. While the incidents that brought attention to the company occurred at a Minnesota hospital, the company has contracts with various hospital systems across the country. Unfortunately, over the last several years, hospitals and other healthcare providers have become increasingly bogged down by unpaid debt, making them and insurance companies, desperate for timely payment.
