Federal Trade Commission Offers the Three D’s for I.D. Theft Protection

Serving Los Angeles, Riverside, Ventura, and San Bernardino Counties and throughout California

Victims of identity theft in California can suffer long-lasting and financially-devastating consequences from the actions taken by thieves. And while there are strong actions that can be taken to minimize damages, the best protection is to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.

In order to help curb the increasing rate of identity theft across the country, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has offered the “three D’s” to best protect yourself against: deter, detect and defend.

Deter Identity Thieves

  • Shred documents that contain financial or personal information.
  • Don’t share personal information over the phone or Internet with an unfamiliar person.
  • Do not use obvious passwords for sensitive websites.

Detect Suspicious Activity

  • Inspect your credit report regularly throughout the year and get free reports from the three major credit bureaus.
  • Watch out for purchases you did not make, missing mail or denials of credit that you did not apply for.

Defend Against a Theft Problem

  • Close accounts that have been compromised by thieves.
  • Put fraud alerts on credit reports.
  • Report your fraud complaint to the FTC and file a police report for the crime.
